New Update: Driver Killed In Southern State Parkway Crash

One person has died following a crash that shut down a Long Island highway for hours.

The wreck occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, March 4, in the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway near exit 41 in West Islip.

New York State Police said the driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identification is being withheld until their families can be notified, police said.

 No other injuries were reported. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles were involved. 

The crash fully blocked the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway, as well as the westbound left lane, for much of the afternoon. All lanes have since reopened.

Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dash cam footage, to contact the agency at 631-756-3300.
